ALLEGED THEFT OF GOLD
Leo Edward Morland, metallurgist, a-ed 42 was remanded by Mr. btout, in the Magistrates’ Court, ellington, yesterday, to appear at Christchurch on January 26 next to answer a charge that, on or about October 29, .1940, bein» a servant in the employ of Arahura Gold Dredging Limited, he stole of alluvial gold of the value of £31,490, ■the property of the company. Mr. J. A. Scott, who appeared for accused, opposed the remand to Christchurch, contending that Greymouth, where most of the witnesses resided, was the most convenient and economical place for the bearing. He had been unable to ascertain when the . witnesses from Canada would arrive, and. suggested a further remand to Wellington for a week. If witnesses were coming from overseas, he wanted their depositions taken at the same time as other people's. Detective-Sergeant IV. McLennan said the Crown law officers had stated that the witnesses from Canada would be oil hand for the hearing at Christchurch on January 26.
