JUBILEE GATHERING
Church Missionary Society The jubilee of the New Zealand Church Missionary Society was celebrated in Wellington recently at the Pioneer Club, guests meeting’ at the invitation of Mrs. C. A. Goldsmith, wife of the general secretary. Mrs. Goldsmith was assisted in entertaining those present by members ot tlie women’s committee. Miss Humphreys, president of the committee, was iu the chair. , The New’ Zealand branch ot the society has several missionaries working in India, Africa and Chinn. So far those in China are being allowed to carry, on their work. Miss Dineen, of the young people’s department, showed the difference that missions had made in uaiiiy directions in China. The Church Missionary Society was instrumental in persuading Chinese girlb to train as nurses. It trained some of the children m its orphanages to become nurses, and the first presentation of diplomas was attended by foreign diplomats . and notable and high Chinese officials. The dignity and high calling ot the nursing service were emphasized, and henceforth the daughters of Chinese dignitaries were ready to undergo training. With other missions, the C.M.S. blazed tlie trail for the reduction of illiteracy among the masses. i Other speakers were Mrs. Mallis, and Mrs. 11. F. Davies, Uganda, who told of tlie coniribnti'.m the C.M.S. was malting toward I lie development of nationa l cliaracter in the transition stage through which North and Central Africa were slill passing, and emphasized the pressing need for reinforcements.
