Half-Yearly Federation Meeting The half-yearly council meeting of the Hutt.Valley. Federation of Women’s In- 1 stitutes was held at Trentham, recently. There was an excellent attendance ot members, who were welcomed by the presidents of the hostess institutes, Trentham, Mrs. Kitchen, and Wallaceville, Mrs. White. Mrs. Kishworth presided, and welcomed'Mrs. Blewnian, mayoress of Upper Hutt, and all institute members. Miss Amy Kane, Dominion president, and Mrs.'Barnicoat, of the Dominion executive, were unable to be present. The secretary’s report showed that all institutes had been busy, spinning, knitting for the forces, making camouflage nets, packing parcels for men overseas, working for the lied Cross, helping ..n canteens, and the Services Club, The treasurer’s report showed that the credit balance had fallen, due doubtless to the many calls on members for patriotic purposes. Mrs. Shadbolt was elected delegate to the Dominion council. After luncheon a roll call was held, at which most institutes in the federation were represented. Members were urged to help in the campaign to produce more vegetables. Suggestions for raising funds to help the Services Club were discussed. Following a discussion on whether capital and .corporal punislinwnt should be reinstated, it was agreed by vote that they should be. Each country in the British Empire was represented in the songs given by the Taita choir. Mr. Darroch, secretary of the Navy League, addressed the gathering on. the Navy’s activities. ■ Winners of the knitting competition were Mesdames Baer, Silverstreain, Cooper, Wallaceville, and Sandford, Wninui-o-Mata. Mrs. Kishworth, Mrs. Shadbolt, and Mrs. Blewman received bouquets of flowers.
Residential Nursery Annual Meeting. The annual meeting of the residential nursery, Owen Street, Wellington, will be held this Friday at 2.30, in the Educational Institute, “Evening Post” Building. Dr. Hubert Smith will be the speaker, and Mrs. L. 0. IT. Tripp will preside. All members and supporters are invited to be present. Outings for Seamen. Labour Day was a day out for seamen visiting Wellington, the British Sailors’ Society having arranged a trip to Otaki. with the co-operation of the county clerk and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson. Two reserved carriages were filled, the train leaving Wellington at 8.30 a.m. and returning at 7.20 p.m., a full and pleasant day being spent on the racecourse. Football and games were played during the morning and in the afternoon Maoris entertained with native songs and-dances. Chief Utiku Hapeta gave <m address of welcome, in Maori, making mention of the fact that this was the first time they had bad the pleasure of men from Denmark visiting them at Otaki. Overseas servicemen have been welcomed back to the society's rooms after being at Ilaj-l-ings for a week. Among the activities arranged for them was a visit to a large sheep station and a trip to I’aki Paki, where they were entertained by the Maoris. On .Saturday and Sunday the rooms were well filled; items were given by Misses D. Burrowes, M. McCallum and T. Dear, and the Sunday service was conducted by th'e port missioner. The society records its grateful appreciation to the pupils and staff of the Wellington Girls' College for gifts of sweets, cakes and knitting for the Merchant Navy.
