CHURCHILL AUCTION
£5OO Realized In Dunedin . (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, October 23. More than £5OO was realized for patriotic funds in a two-day sale of books, manuscripts, -works of art and antiques in tlie first of the Churchill auctions 1 , and the only one to be held in tlie South Island. The collection of books was well representative of New Zealand authors, past and present, and for these prices were generally within market range, but for general works the demand was poor and some interesting first editions, including Dickens, Kipling nnd Trollope items', went cheaply. Pictures and prints’, including a Baxter Napoleon Hi and a Whistler etching, brought good bidding, nnd prices for many beautiful art objects were good. Mr, P, A. Lawler, the organizer, announced yesterday that lie had received the first bid for tlie Churchill Book, the precious volume (but deals with the history of the Churchill family, which was presented to the Prime Minister, Mr.’ Fraser, by- Mr. Winston Chureliill. Tlie offer is £5O, and it; came from a citizen of Auckland. The next sale is scheduled to begin in Auckland on Tuesday next, and will probably run into three days.
