A DUTCH EVENING
The Consul for the Netherlands, Mr. C. M. F. Vigeveno, was the guest speaker at an evening held at the University Women’s Club recently m M ellington. Members of the Dutch Consulate were also present. Mrs. H. Valentine, club ehairman, was hostess. During the evening the consul gave a lecturette on the Netherlands Indies and stressed the bonds of friendship existing between his country and New Zealand. Outlining the history of the Netherlands Indies, he dea.t with t’he political system and showed how at the outbreak of war the Indies were moving rapidly toward responsible selfgovernment. The Indies were not colonies but kingdoms under the Dutch Grown. As instances of lack of ramal prejudice he pointed out that children of all races attended the same schools and that even the highest positions m the army and civil service were open to all races. Mr. Walker Harns screened two interestinir films on Holland, and Mrs. B. Schwimmer described types of lands folk songs, giving several charming examples in Dutch. Mrs. Lockhead moved a hearty vote of thanks and supper was served.
Garden Party at Ilerctauiiga. . The leper nursing sisters, assisted by a willing group of helpers, will hold a garden partv in their beautiful convent grounds at lleretaunga this Saturday at 2.30. The fete will be opened by Lady Ncwall. In spite of wartime dtlaculties. the sisters’ humanitarian woik at the Makogai leper station and in the lslands is being contmued much as usual. It can be understood that tne success of the annual appeal means a great deal to the sisters, whose workjs almost wholly dependent on monetary gifts Any herp will be deeply appreciated. 'There will be stalls, music, amusements and refreshments. Trains are conveniently arranged and buses run from Lower Hutt.
