Davis Too Rugged For Piano

Mowing faster, -hitting harder, and beating his man to the punch, Jackie Davis (NZ Army) proved too rugged fer Al Piano, an overseas serviceman, in a iniddlewoiglit professional match scheduled tor 10 rounds at Labour Hall, Petone, last night. The weights were announced as Davis 112 and Piano 11.8, but the latter appeared to be over that weight, and to lack eondiDavis did most of the leading, and opened a vicious attack in the third round, whipping in a heavily-loaded right to the sid/of the head and foliovying up with a left hook, which had steam behind It. I iano knew all the tricks ot the ring, and t re ' quently claimed his opponents left arm, and the referee had a busy time breaking the pair from clinches. Piano's best blow was a left-hook, with which he scored a fe in round, Davis shot in a beautiful left-hook, which opened a big gash under Piano’s right eye A.t the end of the round, the referee called “ a doctor to examine the injured eye, and on tile medical verdict being that Piano was unfit to continue Davis's right hand was ho sted in token of victory. It was reported that the pair will have a return match at Petone in three weeks’ time. Mr. L. Watson was the referee, and the judging was done by Messrs. R. Brien and A. McKenna. „ The crowded house was well satisfied with-the entertainment provided.

Amateur Preliminaries. E. Clark (Railways), 9.6, was too rugged for J. Ryan (City Mission), 10.1, the referee -stopping an unequal contest third round. A. McGregor (Railways), 10.<, out-pointed E. Willetts (Hedbergs), 10.11, in a willing bout. T. McPherson (Raiways), 7.8, outpointed B. Johansen (Galleys), 7.6, in a brisk little spar. L. Fillip (Railways), 8.7, gained a Points <leciSLOii over R. Hawes (Heretaunga), 8.6, in one of their characteristic displays. Mr. Alf. Cleverley was the referee.
