PHYSICAL WELFARE

More Facilities Required

“In the past there has been too much preaching in the community to youth and not enough practical effort made for their welfare,” said the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. Parry, at a conference yesterday of physical welfare officers. It was all very well to the minds of well-intentioned people, he said, to instruct young men and women they must not do this and that thing, but tnat in wartime they should steer themselies along a particular way according to a plan devised for them. “There is nothing wrong with . tne youth of our country,” the Minister added. “But youth needs something more than theoretical preaching; it needs practical help and facilities for the enjoyment of healthy outdoor recreation which will give mental and bodily training along right lines.” The physical welfare officers, be said, were well'shouldering the community responsibilities of their work. .Cbe young men and the young women engaged in It had done much for the youth of the Dominion by practical and attractive demonstration of the value and advaninge of mental and bodily development. But more facilities than now exist-are required for the work, and institutions, societies, clubs, and various organizations can give practical help, Mr. lairy added. -
