LOST GROUND MUST BE RECOVERED

LONDON, August 24. General Smuts, Prime Minister of South Africa, speaking at-Pretoria yesterday, said the ground lost in North Africa must be recovered. He was convinced that this could be done, given proper planning, with the men and material at our disposal. South Africa was not safe so long as an enemy foot remained on the African continent.

General Smuts paid a tribute to General Auchinleck, whom he described as one of Ihe ablest commanders he had ever met. The fact, that Mr. Churchill had to make changes was no reflection on the men concerned.
