On the way back one Wellington was attacked nine times by a Messerschmitt 109. During the last attack the bomber’s rear gunner got in a long burst of fire and fragments were blown off the Messerschmitt. The duel ended when contact was lost. An Air Ministry communique states: “Last night Hudson bombers of the Coastal Command attacked an enemy convoy off the Dutch coast. Three ships were hit. One of our aircraft is missing.” R.A.F. headquarters in Northern Ireland states: “At 8.30 this morning a German aircraft approached the coast of Northern Ireland from a southerly direction.
