Army Draw With Petone S. JAEGAR’S 16 POINTS As expected, Army made a bold bid at Athletic Park on Saturday afternoon to upset Petone’s unbeaten record in the Jubilee Cup competition, and came ..very, close to doing so, an open and exciting match ending in a draw, 16 all. The weather was beautifully fine, with little wind to mar play, and the display given by’both , teams was worthy of the ideal conditions. The large crowd in the stand was unanimous that it was one of the most brilliant and exciting club games ever seen at headquarters. Play was fast and exciting from the kick-off, both teams seizing-every opportunity to get the bail out to the backs, and many attractive passing movements were seen. It was only desperate tackling which prevented the score from mounting. The first Spell “ honours easy with the score 8 all. O Brien and Donovan scored, tries for Army, O’Brien converting Donovan’s try, which was scored with a brilliant run, in which the Army captain side-stepped and dodged his way right through the defence. 8. Jaegar, who played an outstanding game at centre-threequarter, scored two tries for Petone, one of which he. converted. . Army took the lead early in the second spell, when Brenton scored a try, which O’Brien converted, and forged further ahead when' Donovan cut through for his second try, which he failed to improve from au easy angle. Petone were lasting well, and S. Jaegar reduced the gap with a penalty goal, and evened the scores a little later by scoring his third try and converting it. With the scores level, there was great excitement among the spectators as both teams strained every nerve to notch winning- points. Only splendid defence prevented further scoring, and a splendid display of open Rugby fittingly ended with the scoreboard showing 16 all. , , S. Jaegar was the hero of -the day, as he scored every one of Petone s points, and brought his tally of points this season up to 42. Mr. B.
