EVANS BAY YACHT HARD
Erosion Makes Repairs Necessary
Yachts and launches which have been undergoing overhaul on the hard at Evans Bay are being hurried into the water to enable repairs to be made to the reclamation. The hard was constructed only a few years ago when the reconstruction of the foreshore at Evans Bay took place. It provides the best facilities for slipping keel yachts and launches at present obtainable in Wellington. There is a single slipway, but after being hauled up vessels are shifted sideways by an ingenious system of trolleys and lines, making it possible to handle a very large number of boats. The reclamation was contained on the seaward side by a wooden retaining wall. Against this a considerable southerly swell beats in rough weather, and this winter it has undermined the wall and washed out a good deal of the clay of the reclamation, causing it to subside along the seaward side. Marked acceleration of this erosion has been noticeable after recent southerlies.
The work of repairing the hard could not well be undertaken while the yachts were laid up on the reclamation, and the Evans Bay Yacht and Motor Boat Club, which controls the slipway facilities, is therefore hurrying the vessels into the water, so that the authorities will be able to carry out the repairs.
