DUNEDIN HIGHWAY
Dr. McMillan’s Reply To Mayor
RATE OF CONSTRUCTION
Iteferrhig yesterday to the criticism by the mayor of Dunedin, Mr. A. H. Allen, of his slalement about the new Dunedin main north highway, the
Minister of Marine. Dr. Mc.Millan. said that all the mental gymnastics and theoretical arguments in the world could not alfect the facts, which were there for everyone to see. He added that in the early stages of the work and at a time when there was no need for haste, the Labour council had 23 men employed thereon, whereas now, with the Government section from Waitati to the Saddle making good progress toward completion, the council had only 15 men employed. The mechanical shovel had been taken away and, therefore, obliged to work with barrows and hand-shovels only, the men were of necessity making very slow progress. With a bulldozer to help the job could be done iu a tenth of the time and at a quarter of the cost.
“I would suggest that the mayor look at the job,” said Dr. McMillau. “If he does so, he will agree with me and see the need for much increased activity on the council’s section if the road is to be ready as soon as that part being constructed by the Government.”
