Horticultural Society's Show

At Lower Hutt

The rose show held in the Horticui tural Hall. Lower Hull, yesterday by Hie Hull Valley Horticultural Society presented lhe choicest offerings from gardens in Hie valley. At one side ot till- ball i-oses of every bue were arranged. and tilled Hie hall with their delicate fragrance, while on the other side seasonal flowers, comprising lupins, Iceland poppies and irises, luxuriated, and below was a choice collection of English ferns. The stand below tlie stage was outstanding. One of lhe most, beautiful baskets of flowers was of large golden roses offset with crimson ones, Another basket was arranged with pink pearl rhododendrons and toning roses. Tlie garden circle stands were particularly lovely. Vases of red manuka, large white peonies, Haunting giant crimson poppies and roses mingled in riotous profusion, a flat bowl of large lavender clematis being particularly beautiful. The Petono Borough Council’s display tins time comprised tubbed calceolarias in all colourings, one deep crimson being striking. . A marked improvement was evident in tlie children’s class, which featured mostly shoulder sprays and posies and vases Yf llowers, the posies being mostly of the conventional early-Victoriau variety. One square fiat bowl arranged witli tiny llowers in red, white and blue shades struck a patriotic note, and a vase of native Hora attracted interest. In tlie decorative class a central bowi of delicate pink begonia and tine maidenhair fern was most; effective, as also was a table centred with large shot silk roses and maidenhair fern. Mrs.” A. R. Gower’s stand showed a display of variously shaded rhododendrons. The display of native plants and flora, always a feature of this stand, included a large basket of llax and tlie golden Hower of the fan palm, which dominated the stand, and vases of native flowering plants. A tray of large lavender clematis, vases of warmly-toned bog primulus, Australian rose apple, and bird of paradise llowers were a few of the lovely and original blooms. In the centre-of Hie hall the champion roses were displayed. ’Hie chumpion in Hie novice class was a perfect yellow tea rose exhibited by Aiiss V. Allman, Ville de Paris, while a large white tea rose, Air. George Cairn s exhibit, was lhe champion bloom iu the amateur class. This bloom was also the champion of champions. A guard-of-honour of Hutt Valley High School girls was formed for Airs. Knox Gilmer, who opened the show. Airs. J. S. Barton, wife of lhe president, in Hie unavoidable absence of her husband, expressed pleasure that such a busy woman as Airs. Gilmer had found time to visit the Hull. Airs. Gilmer said she always attended the shows at the Hutt. She referred to the combined efforts of the Hutt and AVellingtou societies in organizing Hie national Hower show, and paid warm tribute Io the efforts of Hie Hutt society. “Dig for victory and bend a little harder over Hie hoe,” counselled Airs. Gilmer in conclusion. She was presented with a lovely shoulder-spray of golden roses and maidenhair fern. The ollieial party comprised Airs. J. S. Bartoii. Airs. J. AV. Andrews, mayoress of Lower Hull, Air. 11. H. Miller, secretary of the Wellington society, and Airs. Miller, Air. and Airs. H. G. Teagle and Air. and Airs. G. Cairns. Tlie ollieial table was a riot of lovely roses and the smaller tables were also centred with roses. Airs. J. AV'. Freeman supervised over the plant stall.

A isitors From Four Centres. Friends from Foxton, Waiturere, lhakara and AA'ollington, were present at the recent meeting of the Poroutawhao AVomeifiS Institute. One new member was welcomed. It was reported that the gardening circle was actively working. Attractive toys were displayed during a demonstration on toy-making given by Airs. Speirs. Aiiss Hewitt gave pianoforte solos and community singing was enjoyed. Competitions were won by Alesdames Speirs mid Arcus, amt Aiiss Freda Tabor. Eastern Tour Described.

■ Airs. Thornley, who recently returned from an extended tour of the East, was the speaker at the last monthly meeting of the Island BayBerhampore League of Alothers. She gave an interesting address on Hie high lights of her lour. Airs. Gaunt [iresided. mid Hie choir, under the baton of Airs. Chambers, sang two items. Gifts of clothing were handed in to be sent to tlie Lady Galway appeal. Afternoon ten concluded the afternoon. Foxton Women’s Institute Committee. A meeting of the Foxton AA’omeu's institute committee was held on Tuesday afternoon and was presided over by Airs. J. It. Middleton, president. New members proposed were Airs. E. Baker mid Aiiss Shortt, Foxton Beach. The group rally delegates’ meeting, which is to be held at Shannon mi NiivemOer 15. will be attended by Mesdames F. Procter mid AA'. Trueman. It was decided lo hold lhe usual 'Chrislmas party for the children, and each member will be asked to provide Ihree paper hats, which will lie judged for eompclilioiis at the party.
