Two Hundred Attend End-of-Year Party
When the Wellington Central branch' of the New Zealand Union of Townswomen’s Guilds held its Christmas party in the Oddfellows’ Ilal>, Allen Street, on Tuesday, nearly 200 members and guests were present. Mrs. J. Pow, president, was in the chair. Tile mayoress, Airs. T. C. A. Hislop, who is patroness of Hie branch, was presented by Airs. Pow with a basket of flowers decorated by Airs. Kinsman. Sprays were presented to Airs. Bow, president, Airs. Kinsman, Dominion secretary. Airs. East, treasurer, and to tlie presidents of district . branches. Mrs. Webb, Hie accompanist, and the secretary were also presented with sprays. These were made by members of the gardening circle, and were most effective and original.
Airs. Hislop thanked the members for their wonderful work during the vear for the Lady Galway Guild, and assured them that there was plenty more work for them to do during the coming year. .She extended her good wishes to all members for Christmas and the New Year. Airs. Pow thanked all members for their loyalty and cooperation during the year, and wished everyone a good holiday, and a brighter New Year. She mentioned that the guild would meet again on the second Tuesday in February.
A number of enjoyable items were given bj r Airs. Roadley (piauolorte solo), Alesdames Luntlius, Creighton, Treacey (vocal items) and Aiiss Loris .McEwan (vocal). All artists were presented with a spray. Special thanks are due to Airs. AVebb, the accompanist. Tea was served, lhe Christmas cake having been given by Airs. Pow. Airs. Hislop cut the cake. It bud been specially iced in the guild colours —red. while, ami blue, and was most attractive. Aiiss Craig, assisted by Airs. L. 11. Angus ami a band of willing helpers, served afternoon tea. nth], did inueli toward making the afternoon a success. 1
Three cheers were given for Airs. Row and Airs. Hislop, and a most enjoyable afternoon came to a close with the singing of patriotic songs and the National Anthem.
Levin Women's Institute. The montlily meeting of Hie Levin AA’onien's institute was held recently. Two neiv members were enrolled, and several visitors were welcomed. The speaker for the afternoon was Aiiss Hazel Johnson, of Alassey College, Palmerston North, who gave an instructive talk on "Food A'alucs,” at the conclusion of which she was accorded a vote of thanks and presented witli a posy. The local patriotic women’s committee wrote thanking the Levin institute, together witli the lhakara institute, for their very successful effort for patriotic funds during the month. Letters were received from several men til the front thanking members for the parcels received. The usual collection was taken up for this fund. Social competitions, held during the afternoon, were won by Airs. Roya* and Airs. L. Salmons. Monthly competitions were won by Mesdames Blake, Hnyter and Aleddings. Airs. Powell was appointed delegate to attend the air force comforts fund committee meeting. Shape of Handkercliiefs.
AA’liy should handkerchiefs always be square? Round, oval or oblong handkerchiefs would he equally as serviceable. hilt we do not know them. Al one lime they wore all manner of shapes. It was Queen Marie Antoinette, who one evening at A'ersaillos intimated her displeasure al the variety of shapes for 'kerchief, and suggested that a uniform shape should be an indication of good taste.
