BRITISH STATESMAN
Citizens’ Tribute To Mr. Chamberlain
In the death of Mr. Neville Chamberlain, the British Commonwealth of Nations had lost a personality of outstanding ability and grace, said the Rev. A. Muriel, who presided during the first part of the intercessory service held in the Wellington Town Hall yesterday. At the invitation of Mr. Muriel, those present stood in silence for a few moments as a tribute to Mr. Chamberlain's memory.
If ever a man sought to play the part of peacemaker it was Mr. Chamberlain, said Air. Muriel. A ith deep humility and yet with great dignity he sought, ground for reconciliation with the leaders of the Central European Powers. But the warmakers would not be denied, and. for rhe time being, they would have their way. So Mr. Chamberlain, iu a spirit of sacrifice, had stepped aside, and in the Providence of God the Commonwealth had been given a Prime Minister of Great Britain who should, with boldness and great courage, bear the burden of tire greater war. But Mr. Chamberlain’s effort for peace would not have been made in vain. The day would surely come when peace, a just and righteous and, they prayed, a permanent peace, would be established on earth. Then would be appreciated the attitude of the Master, “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.”
