GREAT TOLL OF NAZI MERCHANT SHIPS
300,000 Tons Sunk Since April 1 LONDON, May 7. The Admiralty states that out of the Germans’ total losses of merchant shipping since the war—6oo,ooo tons — half lias been lost since April 1. The losses include the “Strength Through Joy” pleasure liner Robert Ley, which was converted into a troopship and which was sunk in the Skagerrak on the night of April 12-13. A British Official Wireless report states that no information is available on whether the German "Strength Through Joy” ship Robert Ley was engaged in troop-carrying when it was sunk in the Skagerrak, but it is assumed that she aud the other vessels accounted for were employed in duties in connexion with the Norwegian campaign. The inference is also drawn from an Admiralty statement that the 300,000 tons of German shipping lost since April 1 were engaged in transport work connected with the Norwegian campaign.
