LARGE SHIPMENT OF ORANGES
Arrival At Auckland FIRST OF CROP FROM COOK ISLANDS (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May 1. Probably the largest shipment of oranges ever brought to Auckland from the Cook Islands arrived today to end tlie shortage which was rapidly becoming extensive throughout the Dominion. The consignment, totalling 29,000 cases, is the first of the new season’s crop from the group, and was lauded in good condition. Watching the first of the season’s output from the Cook Group, an official party, representative of marketing, shipping and growing interests travelled to the loading islands with the ship. Methods, of improving the growing, handling, shipment and marketing of the fruit were investigated during the voyage, when visits were made to Rarotonga, Aitutaki, Atiu, Mauke, and Mangaia. Island councils at Rarotonga and Mangala met Mr. A. Turner, supervisor of imported fruit for the Intern! Marketing Division, when growers’ problems were discussed. Mr. Turner said that the orange crop this season would be a heavy one. In addition to the consignment of oranges the ship also brought about 2000 cases of bananas, and a smaller shipment of mandarins.
