SPORTS FIXTURES ON HUTT GROUNDS
Alternate Location When Wet In City Though cricket and other outdoor games had to be postponed in Wellington on Saturday because of rain, sporting fixtures proceeded in the Hutt Valley under pleasant sunny conditions. A similar position obtained a fortnight ago when play in the first two days of the cricket match New Zealand v. Sir Julian Cairn’s eleven in Wellington was not possible because of rain. This season the Hutt Valley Cricket Association has had only one postponement of Saturday cricket because of rain—in December. The point has been , raised in sporting circles whether in future alternative arrangements should be made to hold important sporting engagements in the Hutt Valleyj weather permitting, when rain necessitates their postponement in Wellington. On the Saturday of the match with Sir Julien Cahn’s team Hutt Valley cricket was postponed to enable players to see the Test, but tennis and other outdoor fixtures proceeded in fine conditions. It has been suggested in cricket circles that it would have been preferable to transfer play to any one of the number of fine grounds available —the Hutt and Petone Recreation Grounds, the Hutt Valley High School’s sheltered ground and others. . With the large population in the valley the local gate would not be inconsiderable, and the distance from Wellington is so short as to make it little inconvenience for city people to come to the Hutt.
