CONTROL OF IMPORTS
Comments By Mr. Downie
Stewart
Dominion Special Service. DUNEDIN, March 28.
Speaking today at the annual meeting of Kempthorne, Prosser’s New Zealand Drug Co., Mr. Downie Stewart said that the recently-imposed import control regulations opened up a very wide subject and the position necessarily raised questions of considerable moment to the directors of the company, particularly as it was not yet known how far this policy was devised as a temporary expedient or whether it was pa_rt of a permanent policy.
Mr. Stewart said he did not propose to discuss the question politically or from an economic point of view, but he said experience had shown that measures of this type tended to become more and more difficult and involved. They must create periods of difficulty, uncertainty and adjustment. Considering all the new factors that had had to be taken into consideration recently, shorter hours and so on, the company was fortunate that it was wisely and prudently managed and so could face the future with confidence.
