Maori Embassy To London
From "The Dominion,” Marell 81, 1914. For two days past a meeting of about 300 Maoris, representing a majority ot' tribes, has been proceeding to Waahi, near Huntly, and there has been a long discussion of a proposal that Maori leaders shall proceed to England and lay. the grievances of the race before the British authorities. Notwithstanding the vigorous nature of the opposition, Tupu has determined that the visit to England shall take place, and berths have been booked in the Niagara, sailing on April 11, for a party of four, comprising Te Rata (the “King”), Tupu Taingakawa (his adviser), Paul (interpreter), and Meta Taraka. The intention is to return In six months. Tupu is confident of success, and is determiued that social distraction shall not interfere with the object of the visit. While proceeding through Canada, the party will endeavour to gam all possible information about the sister Dominion.
It was decided by the board of governors of Canterbury College (N.Z.) today to establish a Chair of Mental Science at the college, and to appoint Mr, C. F. Salmond (present lecturer) _to the professorship at a salary of £650 per annum.
