SETTLERS LANDING ON PETONE BEACH
Maoris Want Their Part Commemorated
The Maoris of the Hut.t district felt that they were not being given the prominence due to them in connexion with the centennial celebrations and had placed on record a resolution requesting that the names of their people who welcomed the first settlers be inscribed on the provincial centennial memorial on Petone foreshore, said the mayor, Mr. G. London, at last night’s Petone Borough Council meeting. Mr. London said that the Maoris felt that it was fitting that their part in Hie landing on Petone beach should be commemorated more than was apparently the intention at present. The council agreed to make suitable representations to the central committee in support of the Maoris’ wishes.
