Opaki Garden Party
“Leylands,” the lovely home of Mrs. R. C. Hodgens, Opaki, was the scene of a very successful garden fete, an annual effort, organized by the women of the Mauriceville sub-branch of the Plunket Society, Mastertoil. The surroundings are particularly beautiful at present, with gay beds of giant dahlias and vivid gladioli about the lawns. A flue avenue of bluegnnis was tin imposing entrance to a bright scene, the lawns being dotted with gaystriped umbrellas and canvas outdoor hammocks for the convenience of the guests Afternoon tea was served under the trees by the committee, and the following conducted the various stalls; Cakes, Mrs. Neilson and Mrs. Forsberg; produce, Mrs. Dagg and Mrs. Donald; sewing. Mrs. Wright and Mi'S. Jenny. The visitors look part in many enjoya ble competitions.
Social Afternoon. The women’s branch of the Labour Party held its first social afternoon for the year, in Die Trades Hall on Wednesday afternoon. Artists who contributed to a delightful programme were Mrs. Galloway, who gave Shylock’s speech from the court scene, Portia’s speech, and vocal solos; and Mrs. Halvorsen and Mrs. Hartley, who sang, the accompaniments being played by Mrs. London and Mrs. Davenport. A visitor from Saskatchewan. Canada. Mrs. Gladys Strum, spoke briefly of her impressions of New Zealand.
