News And Notes From Town And Country Feminist’s Eightieth Birthday. The 80th birthday of Mrs. Carrie Chapman Catt, one of the most remarkable women in the history of the women’s suffrage movement, was celebrated at a dinner party held recently in New York. Founder and honorary life president of the International Alliance of Women for Suffrage and Equal- Citizenship, Mrs. Catt has, for more than half a century, been in the front rank of the women's movement, not only in the interests of suffrage for women, but in public life generally. At this dinner party. 500 women were present to do honour to their famous leader, who gave a stirring address, bidding women carry on the struggle for equality. “It is a hard future,” she said, “but every problem can be solved and some of them must be solved. For your own sake, face the future cheerfully: for your friends’ sake, be optimistic; for your children's sake be confident; and for the sake of all things, be bravely unafraid.” Coming of Age.
A most enjoyable time was spent in the Dalefield Hall on Saturday evening when Mr. and Mrs. P. Hodder entertained about 150 guests at a party and dance to celebrate the coming of age of their sou Noel.
After supper Mr. W. Press proposed the health of the guest of honour, which was drunk with musical honours. The beautiful birthday cake was the gift of the guest’s sister, Miss L. Hodder, Greytowu.
The evening was brought to a close with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and three hearty elreers for Mr. and Mrs. Hodder.
Three Tributes. Tributes to the late Mrs. H. Buddle, past president, were paid at the last monthly meeting of the Kelburn branch of the League of Mothers. Mrs. McPhee referred to her untiring efforts on behalf of the league and Mrs. George Kersley and two former presidents, Mrs. F. McLean and Mrs. B. L. Dallard. also spoke. Members stood in silence in respect to her memory and the meeting adjourned as a mark of respect.
Donors Thanked. Miss Archibald presided at the monthly meeting of the Levin Memorial Homo Committee in Wellington, recently. There were present Mrs. Du Pont, Mrs. C. Levin, Mrs. Luke, Mrs. Poole, Mrs. Willoughby, and Mrs. Gillespie, and the Misses Barry, Greenwood, Morral* and Young. The matron reported that the 29 children in the home were all well. As the Automobile Association’s motor drive could not be held, sweets, fruit and toys were distributed to the children and they bad a happy tea party. The committee thanked the following donors: Mr. Hodge, Scoullar and Co., A Well Wisher, Miss Young, Miss Barry. Miss McDougall, Miss Archibald, Mr. Yates, Marsden School, and the Automobile Association.
Patients’ Outing, An outing for patients of the District Nursing Guild took place recently, at Maori Bank. Twenty-seven patients travelled by bus. the more infirm were accommodated in cars in the care of either committee members or auxiliary drivers. On their arrival at Maori Bank a delicious afternoon tea was served, followed by ice-cream. Chocolates and cigarettes were distributed later in the afternoon. The weather was all that could be desired and the 40 or so patients thoroughly enjoyed themselves amid pleasant surroundings. ■ The committee wishes to thank the auxiliary diners and all who contributed to the success of the outing.
