WATERLOO SCHOOL

Large Attendance At Garden Fete Hundreds attended the Waterloo School garden fete organized by the school committee and parents’ committee assisted by the staff, and held in the school grounds on Saturday afternoon. lhe school committee chairman, -Mr. it. u. Smith, welcomed the newly appointed headmaster, Mr. W. H. Olson, and Mr*, and Miss Olson. Mr. Olsen, who was born in the Hutt Valley, expressed his pleasure at returning. Tim mayor ol Lower Hutt, Mr. J. W. Andrews, congratulated the organizers, lhe school, he said, was more than the boards, committees, staff and pupils, building and grounds, but included all these things and depended on the co-operation of all. Ihe modern school required much that the education board could not supply and for this equipment the school committees and parents' associations made themselves responsible. Mr. Andrews then opened the fete. Posies were presented to Meedames Olson, R. D. Smith, L. Galvin and P. V. Swaffield. A display of folk dancing and figure marching was given by the pupils. Music was played by the Lower Hutt Municipal Band and pipers, under Piper McLellan. A cooking competition, judged by Mrs. L. Galvin, resulted :—Plain scones: Mrs. Thompson, 1; Mrs. Stewart, 2; Mrs. Gee, highly commended. Girdle scones: Mrs. McLean, 1; Mrs. Johnson, 2; Mrs. Foley, highly commended. Pikelets: Mrs. Willis, 1; Mr*. Cooper, 2; Mrs. Dixon, highly'commended. Sponges: Mrs. Hall, 1; Mrs. Sellars, 2; Mr*. Dixon, highly commended. Shortbread : Mrs. Roadley, J.; Mrs. Gordon, 2; Mrs. Sproule, highly commended. The stallholders were Mesdaines A. Addis, A. Meiklejohn, Dainty, E. V. Strachan, F. Black, J. Brown, A. L. Stevens, F. Rushton, Z. M. Ritsou, M. Sproule, G. Bell, E. Rushton, E. Copeland. E. Kings, C. Bowler. .J. Flitter, H. M. Ibell, P. V. Swaffield, A. Malin and Dobson. Misses Noeline Gray, Evelyn Craig, Patricia Armstrong. Verna Woo<.coek, Audrey Broadhead, Maureen Moore and Joan Strachan. Those in charge of competitions were Mi*s Peggy Brownlee and Messrs. Bold, Horwell, A. Malin, M . Dredge, Khoule. Rushton. A. Ritson, K. Johnson, C. Elliott, A. Meiklejohn, J. K. Hale, A. L. Stevens, Brown and Dobson. The committee was Mr. R. D.
