CLUB ROWING
Races On The Harbour
STAR AND WELLINGTON
A light and variable breeze, mostly from the south, and good water conditions at the southern end of Wellington Harbour, enabled the Star Boating Club and the Wellington Rowing Club to make good progress with their respective clubrace programmes on Saturday afternoon. At Petone, however, the water was too rough for rowing. The interprovincial eight, under the eye of the coach, Mr. A. E. White, went for a training row. The Star club's McLeau-Bethune Fours competition attracted an entry of seven crews, and the heats and semifinals were decided. Some of the heats of the junior single sculls competition were also held, and it is hoped to complete these two competitions, and also the senior single sculls, during the week. Results were as follows: — McLean-Bethune Fours, First heat: W. Fitzgerald, J. Clouston, G. Turner, and W. Young, won by two lengths from K. Frazer, L. Waller, G. Fanning, and J. Cowles. Second heat: K. Lambie, P. Taylor, R. Hill, and A. McCook, won by two lengths and a half from J. Jack, P. Mayer, A. Orr, and K. Boyd. Third beat: E. McPherson, J. Gilbertson, L. Laurenson, and A. Simon, won by three lengths and a half from P. Donnelly, B. McGlynn, J. Coates, and G. Jones. Donnelly’s crew would probably have been closer but for a steamer, manoeuvring to berth, backing across the rowing course and causing the rowers hurriedly to change their course. G Ryan, B. Murphy, W. Hawker, and B. Veitch, drew the bye in the first round. In the first semifinal, Ryan beat Fitzgerald by three lengths, and in the second semifinal, MacPherson beat Lambie by a length. .
