ROUND UP’S FINE PERFORMANCE
Ohineiiiuri Cup Won With 9.7 LORNACRE TAKES SPRINT By Telegraph—Press Association. PAEROA, March 17. Weather and track conditions were ideal for the opening day of the Ohineinuri Jockey Club’s autumn meeting today. Totalizator investments amounted to £32,943/10/- compared with £27,950 last year, an increase of £4984/10/-. Brazen Bold Improved. Improved as a result of his -recent racing, Brazen Bold won the Karangahake Handicap in good style from the eachway favourite Heroic Maid, who reached the front quickly from an outside post position and attempted to lead all the way. Heroie Maid was just in front when, the field had settled down and she came into the straight ahead of Brazen Bold, who was tucked in behind on the fence, Mehora, Foxmond. Surmise (rails), Glen Connell and Esquire (wide out). Once in line for the post Brazen Bold soon ran to Heroie Maid and he had her measure over the last furlong to beat her with a little in hand by half a length. Surmise ran on best of the others to be two and a half lengths away third and Esquire was a close fourth. Then in a bunch were Foxmond, Constant Star and Glen Connell, with Karatoki next. Brazen Bold is much improved, Foxmond and Esquire were badly placed early and forced to cover a good deal of ground.
Third Successive Win
Patiently ridden in the early stages by M. Ritchie, the each-way fhvourite Electric Spear scored hie third successive win when he prevailed in the Handicap Hurdles.
British Sovereign made the running from King’s Lancer and they were still the leaders half a mile from home, where Loombination was bandy in third position, with Siwell, Electric Spear and Forest Lake moving up. Loombination and Electric Spear drew clear approaching the turn and came into the straight several lengths ahead of Siwell. Electric Spear held a slight advantage at the last fence and went on to win by a length and a half from Loombination. Gaecyne finished solidly on the rails just to beat Siwell for third. Full of Scotch, who is improving, was fifth, followed by British Sovereign and Count Roussillon. Games Decisively, Benefited by recent racing, the three-year-old Gamos showed his best form -to date in winning the Awaiti Handicap, for which Nithinount and Bronze Moth were the favourites. After jumping out well Gamos followed Bronze Moth till reaching the straight and then came on to beat him very decisively by two lengths and a half. Royal Message, always well placed, held on gamely for third, and Silver Cloud was a good fourth. Then folowed Royal Fawkes, who had to cover a lot of ground, and Hai Mangu.
Gamos is bred on staying lines and may go on improving.
Splendid Performance.
The t.pp,-weight and each-way-favour-ite, Round Up, was responsible for a splendid performance in winning the Ohinemuri Cup with 9.7. Round Up was not well placed in the early stages and had to travel outside the first two horses for about five furlongs, when Galilee was making the running from Balinavar and Gay Rebel. With half a mile to go Te Hai joined Galilee in front and they came into the straight together ahead of Balinavar, Gay Rebel,, Kena, Round Up, Gay Rose and Golden Sheila, who were in close order. As soon as they straightened up Round Up made an effort to go through between the leaders and was disappointed. However, he received an opening in another few strides and soon ran to the lead to withstand by a long head a determined challenge from Golden Sheila, who finished strongly on the outside. Balinavar battled on gamely to be a length and a half away third, and Galilee was fourth. Then followed Gay Rose, Te Hai and Master Brierly. Tiie first and second horses were defigiitely superior to the others on the day, Round Un emphasizing the fact that he is the best handicap horse in Auckland. Kaspian Scores. The apprentice O. Evans rode his second winner of the day when he piloted Kaspian to victory in the Nethertou Hack Handicap, for which Boustar was the favourite. Spinning Wheel reached the front quickly and went ou to make the running from Haile Boy and Boustar, Kaspian moving up on the outside. As the field went along the back, nearing the turn, Haile Boy joined Spinning Wheel in the lead, and they led into the straight from Boustar and Kaspian. Once in line for the post Boustar (rails) and Kaspian (outsjde) challenged, Kaspian running on strongly to win by half a length from Haile Boy. Spinning Wheel was a head away third, and Bonstar was another head back fourth. Dauber, Chikara and Philemup were next to finish. Kaspian was patiently ridden and finished well, llessketoon fell as the field was going out of the straight in the first furloug. Favourite Wins. On the strengtli of his recent victory over hurdles at Wanganui, Don Eritm was. supported down to odds-on for the McGuire Steeplechase and he duly won. tbuugli lie had little to spare from the second fancy, Biform. Roxy made the pace, witli Don Erma and Biform in close attendance, and they were almost abreast startlin' the last round. Over the last half-mile Bifurru and Don Erma drew away and they hud a great contest. Less than 100 yards from the post it appeared as if Biform would win, hut condition told iu the lust little bit and Dou Erma, vigorously ridden by J. 11. Mcßae, got the decision by a bead. Roxy weakened over the Haul round and he was 50 yards away third and King Stroud a poor fourth. All-tlic-Way Win. . Beginning very smartly from the inside position, Loruacre was never headed in the St. Patrick’*: Handicap. He was closely attended by Maxam, Llangollen, Orate and Tepoto till the straight was reached, when he ran ou solidly to win decisively from RuleCle, who came from well back and battled on gamely to beat Day Wind by a narrow margin. Day Wind was also running "ii solidiy and returned a double-figure dividend. The tojiweight, Llangollen, who was almost in line fourth, was responsible lor a fine performance under her big weight. Minilaw Beaten. After hie two recent victories. Mintlaw was made a good favourite for the Komata Handicap but be had to lower his colours to Kenneth Robert, who paid double figures. Kenneth Robert began very smartly and was soon in command from Huntingmore, British Nation and Sir Robin. Kenneth Robert came into the straight clear of Torch, Huntingmore, Mintlaw, Sir Robin and British Nation. Kenneth Robert held his own in the run home to win by two and a half lengths from Mintlaw,- who held ou gamely to beat British Nation by a head. Huntingmore
was a close fourth, followed by Torch, Town Section and Spearford. Kenueth Robert was assisted by his very smart beginning and won well. Mintlaw ran another good , race.
