AT LITTLE AMERICA
Effort to be Made to Berth Bear of Oakland (Received January 31, 7.15 p.m.) Little America, January 30. Tired of waiting for high winds and seas to abate and give the ships favourable berths at the Bay of Whales. Rear-Admiral Byrd to-day wirelessed (be master of the Bear of Oakland to make an immediate attempt to break through the loose pack ice which fills the bay and berth alongside tlie low barrier in Eleanor Bolling Bight, about four or five miles north of Little America.
Two tractors have commenced to haul stores to this position, and when the Bear of Oakland comes alongside she will be loaded by means of “flying fox” rigging. She will then relay stores to the Jacob Ruppert, which js standing in at the mouth of the bay. While enormously adding to the difficulties, the saving of time and fuel will provide compensation for the use of this method. Sunshine 'has been rare of recent weeks, even with 24 hours of daylight, the sun having been scarcely seen since January 10.
