Civil Service Entrance

Sir, —I was interested ito read the letter in Monday’s “Dominion” in reply to the official statement why university graduates over 21 are not eligible for Government cadetship. The reply is that this is a democraitie country, therefore the sons of poor parents should be given the best chance. But surely young men who have completed their studies will do the work more eiliciently than those woo have to study at night and, nearing examinations, till past midnight. It is democracy run mad to put efficiency aside. No wonder the taxpayer has had to pay through the nose for departmental services, to keep up enormous staffs. Besides, there are quite a few comparatively poor people who sacrifice themselves to let their sons complete their degree first, so that there will toe no risk of impairing their health.—l am, etc., PARENT.
