Minister Voices Japan’s Hopes FIRM ACTION OTHERWISE By Telegraph.—Press Assn.— Copyright. (Received January 30. 110 a.m.) Tokio, January 29. In the Upper House, Admiral Osuml, Minister of Marine, declared that Japan hopes to avoid a naval race, but if forced into one will meet it resolutely, even if the nation is obliged io live on okayu (rice gruel). AIR BASE AT SIAM Japan Reported to be Making Bid USE IN WAR SUGGESTED (Received January 29. 11.35 pan.) London. January 29. The “Daily Herald’s” special correspondent states that Japan is making a bid for an air base at Siam within striking distance of Singapore, ostensibly for civilian air transport. She hopes to establish a service between Tokio and Bangkok at the beginning of the autumn, and is ‘ using Douglas machines. It is intended that the terminus in Siam shall be. a base for Japanese war operations if need arises, and efforts are being made to win Siamese friendship.
