DRAMATIC OUTBURST
Hauptmann in Witness-box COMPOSURE OTHERWISE (Received January 29, 5.5 p.m.) Flemington, January 28. Excepting for a dramatic outburst, Hauptmann went through a stringent cross-examination by Mr. Wilentz today with a great deal of composure, even laughing and joking. At a point where the prosecutor accused the defendant of lying, Hauptmann leapt up and cried, “You lied to me too, in this court. You stop that. I feel innocent. lam innocent.” Hauptmann, under cross-examina-tion, was compelled to make several damaging admissions. He would not Hatly state that Fisch had written the ransom notes or committed the kidnapping, although tlie prosecutor gave him an opportunity to do so. He admitted mis-spelling certain words in his own notebooks and similarly mis-spel-ling in the ransom notes. He denied statements he had made to the police when first arrested and denied with evident anger an allegation that he had told a friend he wished to get rid of his wife. He explained that .he had hidden 1400 dollars from his wife, but was unable to explain why he had difficulty at the same time in meeting a 74-doilar bill due to a brokerage house with which he was trading.
