TOOK SMALL BETS
Barman Who Obliged Customers FINE OF £2O IMPOSED A fine of £2O and costs was imposed by Air. E, Page, S.AI., in the Magistrate’s Court, AVellington, yesterday on a barman, Victor Nelson, aged 43, for using the bar of the Royal Oak Hotel as a gaming house. Detective-Sergeant T. Y. Hall, who prosecuted, described how he had instructed a constable in plain clothes to endeavour to place bets in the city. He succeeded in making bets with defendant at the hotel. Later he collected a small dividend'from Nelson. A search of the premises Yevealed no betting material except a couple of tickets bearing the names of horses. ; Defendant had admitted that he had rung up bookmakers from the hotel to place small bets “merely to oblige customers.” He had placed only 14 or 15 bets in the last five months. “We have no evidence that his betting is carried on to any great extent,” said Detective-Sergeant Hall. “He said he was only an agent.” Air. A. J. Mazengarb, on behalf of defendant, said the case was an unfortunate one, because Nelson received no commission. He made nothing out of what lie had done. He placed the bets merely to oblige customers and to retain their goodwill.
