HUTT VALLEY NEWS
Two veranda posts outside the shop I o£ Mr. Herbert I’ratiey, Jackson Street, Petone, were broken yesterday mornins through a lorry driven by a youth named Tyrell crashing into them. It is stated that tiie mishap was caused through the steering gear locking when the driver swerved to avoid running over a dog. Tyrell was slightly injured. This is the second time within a week that veranda posts in Jackson Street have been damaged in this way. A total of 56,088 passengers was carried on the Eastbourne ferries, Muritai and Cobar, during December. This was 13,095 more than the number carried in December. 1933. The total number carried from April 1 to December 31 was 280,20-1, compared with 263,238 for the same period the previous year. A suggestion that a endeavour slioutd be made to hold a gala week on a large scale in future years was made by the town clerk and general manager, Air. C. L. Bishop, at the meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council, on Thins day night. Eastbourne had all the facilities to carry out successful!;' such a scheme, the proceeds of which could be expended on beach front and other improvements by unemployed men at full rates of pay, said Air. Bishop. EASTBOURNE RATES Largest Amount Collected This Year “To the end of December a total of £8217 in rates had been collected,” stated the report of the town clerk and general manager, Air. C. L. Bishop, read at the meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council on Thursday night. “This amount is made up of £5739 ofcurrent rates and £2478 of arrears. The total for the same period last year was £5792, made up of £5094 current and £698 arrears. The increased collection for Illis year is £2425. and this must be considered very satisfactory. A further large amount will be collected before the imposition of the 10 per cent, penalty on February 14. “Three hundred permits to connect with sewerage service have been issued, and the work of connecting properties is steadily proceeding.” The,receipts from all sources for the general account had fortunately exceeded the estimates, the report continued. The expenditure had also been higher, but the position was at present quite satisfactory, although it would be as well to make every endeavour to conserve the credit balance. AVith the completion of the water and sewerage works, the full charges on account of loans would require to be met in the future, and with the change over to the new services the annual charges were higher.
