UPPER HUTT BOROUGH
Meeting of the Council A decision to impose a 10 per cent, penalty on rates outstanding after February 7 was made at the meeting of the Upper Hutt Borough Council last night. Grateful thanks to the fire brigade for its prompt and untiring attention in extinguishing a recent fire was expressed in a letter received from Messrs. J. O. E. Cottle and E. W. Cottle, who enclosed a donation of three guineas. Or. W. Greig said the donors showed a very fine spirit in recognising the services of the brigade. No cases of infectious disease have been notified, and general health continues to be good, stated the report of the borough inspector, Mr. C. E. Yarnell. Noxious weeds, especially ragwort, had received attention, and notices had been served to effect a clearance. The water pressure at present was about normal, but the supplementary supply in areas affected during the recent drought'should receive further consideration.
Bicycle riding on the footpaths of Upper Hutt was commented on by Cr F. P. Keys. Ho said he had noticed that a lady had to move on to the road in order lo dodge one of the cyclists. He suggested that if one or two offenders were caught and made an example of, it would help the position.
