MAIDSTONE PARK
Picnickers’ Appreciation
Appreciation af the excellent condition of Maidstone Park on the occasion of their picnic and the courtesy and assistance of the grounds superintendent, Mr. 11. W. Dalton, was expressed in a letter from the secretary of the picnic committee of the Wellington Harbour Board, received at the meeting of the Upper Hutt Borough Council last night. “If in the near future the council could erect a swimming pool then it is safe to conjecture that it would be almost impossible to find a better equipped and more beautiful ground for picnics,” the letter stated. Cr. J. Purvis said the borough’s ratepayers had had to pay for admission on the day of the picnic. He did not think it was right that they should be debarred even though there were picnics on. Cr. A. Howell: I don’t see myself that we should have to pay. The park one day will, I hope, be our property. I thought it was an understood thing that people in this borough should have the right to enter the park free of charge. Cr. W. Greig said the remarks were not an attack on the administration. The mayor, Mr. A. J. McCurdy: Do you desire an explanation from the superintendent? At the request of the meeting Mr. Dalton explained that as soon as he was acquainted of the position he informed the harbour board officials and they discontinued the charge for the local people. Actually very few ratepayers were charged.
The explanation was accepted.
