There was some confusion and more than a little amusement at. the ceremony at the Sandilands cottage homes scheme at Christchurch when the orchestra of the Returned Soldiers’ Association began to play two tunes at once (reports “The Press”). The Duke of Gloucester had laid the foundation stone and was just moving off to his car. The conductor thought the occasion appropriate for a little music and gave the necessary signal. The violins soared away on the first bars of the national anthem, and most of ihe other instruments began something which eventually became recognisable as “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” This predominated, but not until the Duke and his companions had removed their hats and stood to attention. His Royal Highness enjoyed the joke as much as anyone, and he laughed heartily with the crowd. The orchestra subsequently played both tunes.
