FORDELL TRAINER

A New Appointment

NOTES AND COMMENTS

Wheriko For Melbourne

(By “The Watcher.”)

The position o' private trainer at Fordell to Mr. W. MCA. Duncan, falling vacant owing to the ill-health of F. Tilley, has been filled by the appointment of David Marks. Marks served his apprenticeship at Chokebore Lodge, Riecarton, under the late Edward Cutta, and was attached to that establishment for nineteen years, He then left the racing game, but returned to it three years ago in the capacity of head lad to the brothers Harry and Albert Cutts, successors to their father at Chokebore. Marks will take up his duties at Fordell about the middle of February. Fresh Horses.

Fresh horses engaged at Trentham today are Sir Spear, Sunny Maid, Dollar Bill, Vivienne, Lapel, Raparahara, Salt Spray, Trivet and Grajid Blow. .There are also some dual engagements, among them being Red Rufus, Dombey, Princess Doreen and Rereatu. Won Here in March.

Salt Spray, a fresh horse in the Thorndon Handicap, has not been long back from Melbourne, as he arrived on Tuesday of last week. Last March he was successful in a hack mile race on the Trentham course, beating Silver Sight, from whom he was receiving 31b. They meet on the same terms to-day. Have Met Before.

Golden Wings and Red Manfred, who meet on level terms in the Summer Handicap to-day, both contested the Hardourt Cup in October, 1933. Red Manfred beat Golden Wings by half a length. To-day Golden 'Wings comes in on 31b. better terms than under the weight for age scale. A Costly Placing.

Emissary to-day presents a striking example of bad placing. Prior to the meeting this week, he hud won only two races, his second success having been over five furlongs at Waikouaiti on New Year’s Day wheji, carrying 7.7, he beat a moderate field of hacks. On Tuesday, however, he took on the Wellington Stakes, in which his weight for age was 8.6, or three pounds above Mother Superior, who beat him by a. head, and the Kame amount above Variant whom be beat. Mother Superior ran second in the open sprint on Thursday, and Burnish was fourth. Burnish also received 31b. from Emissary in the Stakes, and finished behind him, so that his third placing in that event has been very costly. A Newcomer.

Vivienne, who is a fresh runner m the Kaitoke Handicap to-day, is a four-year-old mare bv Cockpit, bred and owned by Mr. W. Mcßeth, at Otaki. Back to Melbourne.

Wheriko, who has been showing greatly improved form since his return to New Zealand will, in all probability, bo going back to Melbourne very shortly. His improvement in the face of being brokenwinded is striking, but according to A. D. Webster he has been undergoing special treatment and so far it has every appearance of being successful. On the Decline.

The Wellington Racing Club Handicap on Thursday included two previous Wellington Cup winners in Royal Artist and Vertigcrn, and a previous winner of the rae'e in Red Sun, but none of the trio was good enough to make any showing this year.

Rider Will Be Changed. A fresh jockey will have to be found for Lucidus to-day as 11. Goldfinch has gone to the Takapuna meeting winch opens at Ellerslie to-day.

Tiger Gain’s Correct Weight. Ti"-er Gain’s correct weight in the Wanganui Cup is 8.3 not 8.9 as published in yesterday’s Dominion.
