Visit of Lord Kitchener (From “The Dominion,” January 21, 1910.) The Prime Alinister (Sir Joseph Ward) announced yesterday that the military arrangements for- the approaching tour of New Zealand bj- Fiekl-Alarshal Lord Kitchener were practically complete. Lord Kitchener will arrive at the Bluff on Thursday, February 17. . . . on his arrival at the Capital will be accorded a civic welcome and entertained at a banquet by the Alinistry. The harbour defences, garrison artillery, senior and junior cadets, will be inspected the following day. Troops from all parts of the district will mobilise at a convenient base near the city, and encamp in preparation for the field operations, which are to be carried out on Saturday. V ♦ -J “The Sportsman,” London, is opening a subscription list, to enable Barry to relinquish his present employment and to begin training immediately for his match with "Arnst for the sculling championship Of the world, to be rowed on the Zambesi in August. ♦ ♦ » After fighting in every court for two years, John R. Walsh, president of the defunct Chicago National Bank, failed to secure the quashing of his conviction. AValsh, who was sentenced in 1908 to five years’ detention in a penitentiary for fraudulently lending about £3,000,000 of the bank’s funds, will now serve his sentence. The Tokio correspondent of the “New York Herald” reports that Japanese policy firmly rejects the proposals of the United States Secretary of State (Mr. Knox) for the neutralisation of the Alanchtirian railway.
