Manawatu District Tourney SECOND DAY’S RESULTS Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North. January 22. The Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association’s annual district tournament was continued on the Palmerston North Club’s courts today. Good progress is being made with tlie various events, but it will be necessary to continue the tournament to-mor-row afternoon. Results to-day were as follow:— Championship Events MEN’S SINGLES. First round: Graham beat Dr. Thompson, 6-0, 6-2; Harris beat McKenzie, 6-3, 6-0; Say well beat McMurray, 6-2, 6-2; Christie beat Humphrey, 6-5, 6-5; Beckett beat Robertson. 6-0. 6-1; Hill beat Nuttall. 6-1. 6-1. Semi-final: Boddy and Swainson beat Johnson and Cope, 6-3, 6-3. MINISTER FAREWELLED Gathering at Greytown Greytown, January 22. At the invitation of the Mayor, Mr. 11. T. Rees, many citizens of Greytown met last evening to bid farewell to the Presbyterian minister, Rev. F. H. Taylor, and to Mrs. Taylor. Mr. Taylor, in addition to his parochial duties, had done good service to the town and district, especially by the effort he had made to get the Greytown Hospital reopened after being closed down by the Hospital Board, said Mr. Rees. It gave him much pleasure to preside at such a large meeting. The Rev. Mr. White (Methodist), Rev. Mr. Dickie (Presbyter of the Presbyterian Church), and Rev. Mr. George, of Masterton, all spoke in most eulogistic terms of Mr. Taylor. In reply. Mr. Taylor thanked all for the warm and kindly feeling extended to him and Mrs. Taylor. He thought, perhap# his time had not been wasted during his sojourn in Greytown, and he had specially to thank the Rev. Mr. Dickie for his strong and loyal friendship. He felt that now was the time when there should be unity among the churches. A splendid musical programme was given by lady and gentlemen singers, who were accompanied by Mrs. Taylor and the Misses Trotman. Mr. Maxton ami Mr. McMinn presented a cheque to Mr. Taylor from the church members. During the evening an excellent musical programme of vocal items was given. > WANGANUI COURT RETURNS Wanganui. January 21. During the year ended December 31, 1934, 14 petitions for divorce were tiled in Wanganui, and 10 were granted. For tlie quarter ended December 31, 1934, £2002/5/11 was sued tor, and 16 civil warrants executed. For breaches of the law during that period 209 cases against males were in the Magistrate’s Court, and 43 against females, while in the Children’s Court, 17 cases against males and one against a female were heard. Bankruptcies filed during the same quarter were one debtor’s petition and one creditor’s petition. JAIL FOR~DRUNKENNESS Third Offence in Four Days Palmerston North, January 22. Pleading guilty to a charge of drunkenrg,'Rg, his third offence in four days, Alfred Fredrick Quartermain, a labourer, with no fixed abode, was sentenced to ten days’ imprisonment by Air. W. LBlack, J.P., in the Magistrate's Court this morning. Senior-Sergeant Whitehouse said cused had been before the court on Saturday and Monday. On Monday night he had been found sleeping on a tootpath near tbe fountain in the Square. Accused had taken a stone from a rockery for a pillow and had wrapped a coat around himself. NEW DEBATING SOCIETY Palmerston North Meeting Palmerston North. January 22. On tlie recommendation of the provisional committee set up lust week, the Palmerston North Literary and Debating Society was formed with a constitution and rules at a meeting in the city council chambers, last night.
