ORIGINAL SONG CONTEST
Competitions Society’s Plans There is every indication that the class for original song compositions fostered last year by the long-established Wellington Competitions Society, and to be continued this year, is likely to develop m importance and popularity. Several fresh inquiries have already been receiver! from various parts of New Zealand, and no doubt additional interest is added to this year's festival, to be held as usual in August next, by the fact of the presentation of a handsome cup to the Competitions Societ.v by their Excellencies, Lord and Lady Bledisloe. In drawing up the conditions, which are about to be submitted for approval, the society has endeavoured to give effect to the wish expressed by his Excellency that compositions should be “Maori in • tradition, motif, and harmony.” That we have the latent talent there is no question. Professor B. T. Heintz, of Melbourne, the judge of last year's entries. it will lie remembered, complimented the society on the splendid _ initiative taken by it and on the exceedingly promising nature of the majority of the songs sent him.
