WOMEN’S CRICKET

Players Striking Form THE ENGLISH VISIT

(By

“Bowler.”)

A start was made on Saturday with the second round of senior games in the Wellington Ladies’ Cricket Association’s competitions. Technical O.G. A are leading still by one point from Technical O.G. B, a fine record for the Technical Old Girls' club. Outstanding performances were:— Batting—Senior: M. Simpson (Karori.) 67, Janet Mack (T.O.G. B) 62, M. Smith (Wesley) 38, I. Pickering (C.0.G.) 35, N. Sheridan (T.O.G. B) 32, J. Watson (C.0.G.) 28, A. Ell (T.O.G. A) 27, L. Harris (T.O.G. A) 26. T. Wind (T.O.G. B) 27, R. McCahon (Wesley) 25. Junior: J. Meyer (Aitkens) 35, O. Whitelaw (Y.W.C.A.) 23, V. Bellamore (Aitkens) 21. Bowling: M. Smith (Wesley) eight for 30, M. Hawkins (Karori) six for 24, N. Sheridan (T.O.G. B) four for 8, J. Mack (T.O.G. B) four for 11, Bourke (Y.W.C.A.) four for 16. I. Pickering (C.0.G.) four for 23, P. Brogan (T.O.G. A) four for 24, J. Meyer (Aitkens) three for 18. Spectators at Emerson Street park witnessed two good games on Saturday between T.O.G. A and College O.G. seniors, and the Woolworths v. Trinity juniors. College O.G. gave Technical O.G. A a good fight, but were unfortunate in losing by 19 runs. College O.G.’s fielding was very weak in parts. A. Ell batted well for Technical, hitting some hard fours to leg. H. Buck has improved considerably since last season, and played a very stylish bat. L. Harris was again the not out bat, scoring a good 26, which included five fours. Watson and Pickering, for College 0.G., put up a good partnership, making 63 between them. Pickering was fortunate in that she was dropped at mid-off in about her second over. It was a very hard shot, however. Watson cracked six fours, as also did Pickering—mostly on and off-drives. Watson was ultimately stumped and Pickering run out. B. Charles hit the only six of the day. M. Rofe was responsible for bowling two, catching two, and running out one —a good performance. Phil Brogan was bowling a good length as usual, anA took four good wickets. Technical O.G. B. were much too good for Swifts, who only fielded seven of their regular players. D. Simons and D. Cleverley had nearly all the bowling to do. Janet Mack batted exceptionally well for Technical 0.G., as also did Jean Mack, H. Sheridan and T. Wind. Jean Mack and N. Sheridan shared the bowling honours, each taking four wickets. N. Sheridan bowls a good medium-pace break ball. M. Ryan fielded very well at mid-on for Swifts. Wesley secured their second win this season by defeating Karori. M. Smith was right on form, and helped her team considerably by scoring 38 and taking eight wickets for 30. She is a good allrounder. R. McCahon, L. Mumm, M. Gandy and N. Norton also batted well. Karori are unfortunate in not having many bowlers, most of the work falling on M. Hawkins, who took six for 24 on Saturday? Mrs. Fuller failed to get going properly in this innings. Among the Juniors. Aitkens secured a well-deserved victory over Y.W.C.A J. Meyer, who was nominated for representative practice and who shows promise, made highest score and took three for IS. This player .s quite a good slow bowler. V. Belhlmore is. another good all-rounder who helped with the score and took two for 14. Olive ■Whitelaw batted well for Y.W.C.A., as also did Murphy, the not-out batswomau. Bourke and Smith shared the bowling honours for Y.W.C.A. The Technical juniors will not recommence playing until February 10, so will miss quite a few games. Anniversary Day. It is proposed to play a senior match, Technical Old Girls Combined v. The Rest on Anniversary Day, and a good game should result. Players selected for representative practice have been getting in a lot of hard work lately under Mr. P. Fulton, and the .team will probably be chosen very soon now. The fielding in particular has improver] considerably. Players selected for trial nre reminded of the fielding practice on Thursday evening at Nairn Street Park. Fixtures for Saturday. Senior: Wesley v. T.O.G. B, Emerson 2; Swifts v. College 0.G., Nairn Street 1: T.O.G. A v. Y.W.C.A. Emerson 1; Karori, a bye. Junior: Woolworths v. Aitkens. Nairn Street 2; Trinity v. Y.W.C.A., Tane-a Crescent.
