ANNUAL PICNIC

Harbour Board Staff Excellent organising arrangements and brilliant weather were factors which contributed in a large measure to the successful Harbour Board picnic conducted for the first time by the Sports and Pastimes Club at Maidstone Park, Upper Hutt, yesterday. The outing was probably the best the Harbour Board staff has enjoyed, and the attendance, 1000, was at least equal to any of the forerunners. Competitions of all sorts—races, dancing, and so on—held the attention of the gathering throughout the day, and prizes were freely distributed, to the intense pleasure especially of the children. The chairman of the board, Mr. T. R. Barrer, in presenting the prizes to the adults, expressed general.gratification at the opportunity of meeting members of the board’s staff under such favourable conditions. The holiday and the conditions under which it was granted were matters of pleasure to the board, which appreciated the services of its employees. It was indeed pleasing to know that members of the staff could have one day in which to assemble for recreation and social intercourse. Whether it was due or not to the knowledge disseminated by the Plunket institutions it was nevertheless an outstanding feature of the gathering to see such a number of healthy children. Their sturdy limbs and general healthiness were remarkable, Mr. Barrer said. Officials for the picnic were as follow: —Chairman of picnic committee, Captain A. V. Hale Monro; secretary, Mr. N. A. Ingram; handicapper, Mr. A. W. O. Travers; chairwoman of ladies’ committee, Mrs. W. D. Elliott. The Highland dancing judges were Miss Gladys Smythe and Mr. M.' Dargie, and the pipers were Messrs, G. McLellan and D. Young. The Port Nicholson Band was in attendance. Among those present was the Mayor of Upper Hutt, Mr. A. J. McCurdy.
