TO AUSTRALIA IN 36 HOURS
* Tests of New Comet Engine Dominion Special Service —By Air Mail. London, December 22. Experiments now being conducted with an improved Comet aeroplane of th 6 type in which Scott and Black won the Mildenhall-Melbourne air race in 2 days 22 hours are expected to make it possible to fly from England to Australia in under 36 hours. It is understood that tests with a super-charged type of the racing Gipsy Six engine used in the original Comets show a tremendous increase iu their power output. They are expected to improve the cruising speed from 225 m.p.h. to 275 m.p.h., giving a top speed of about 300 m.p.h. In addition, it is proposed to increase the petrol load to enable a range of 3100 miles to be maintained. These improvements would make it necessary to convert the aircraft into a single-seater.
