Madoff (1855-1914), one of the brilliant members of. the modern Russian School of Music, close friend and favourite pupil ot Rimsky-Korsakov, dived deep into the folk-lore of his country, and made extensive use of what he brought to the surface. “Etude In A Flat Major,” “Etude in F Major,” "Barcarolle in F Sharp Major” (Chopin). The word “studies” or “Etudes,” is apt to have a rather stern and forbidding sound, and of course many ot the thousands of piano pieces which bear that name are intended merely to help the student t<> overcome one or other of the difficulties of his instrument. But those of Chopin ;u particular have besides a really musical or poetic idea welded Into their fabric. “Weeping Mist,” “At the Bathing Pool,’’ “The Island,” “Sea Music” (Hutchens). The Inclusion of a small bracket ot the piano compositions of Frank Hutchens adds interest and variety to the present programme. “The Engulfed Cathedral,” “Arabesque in G Major” (Debussy). Debussy (18(12-1918). is the great modern impressionist, and may be regarded as '.lie founder of the school of impressionism in music. Hi's works are. notable for the exquisite pastel colours and shimmering harmonies which he employed to suggest the picture or subject which he chose for his titles, be it a legendary submerged cathedral, gardens in the rain, or moonlight. His graceful “Arabesque” resembles a “Rondo” in form, containing a theme with ornamentations which render them exquisite. “Nocturne.” “Scherzo” (Bowen). York Bowen.
