ATHLETES MEET
Triangular Contest Won
By
Wanganui
GOOD COMPETITION One day soon a large part of the Wellington public that used to be interested in athletics and cycling will discover that, in the past season and also in the present one, they have been missing some excellent competitions Recently there has been a revival in keenness and organisation among Wellington provincial contestants, and the meeting on Saturday night at the Basin Reserve demonstrated this well. It deserved a better attendance than the fifteen hundred or so spectators who were present. The meeting, which was held under electric light, was a triangular contest between the Wellington, Kiwi and Wanganui amateur athletic clubs, and details were well organised by the club officials. The only hitch was at the beginning, when N. Pedwell, J. Wade, C. Hanson (cyclists), and L. Burgess (runner), of the 20 Wanganui contestants, having been held up in their car at Foxton, arrived half an hour late and missed several events. Despite this disadvantage, Wanganui won the points contest with a wide margin, gaining 50 to Wellington’s 21 and Kiwi’s IS. Points were six for a win, three for a second, and one for a third. Rafter’s Good Time. In the flat events, one of the finest performances was given by T. Rafter, of the Victoria College club, when he won the 880 yards handicap, in a field of 15. The only man handicapped behind Rafter was Ogg, of Olympic club, who finished fourth. Rafter kept behind the bunch until there was less than a hundred yards to go, when he flashed ahead and won fairly decisively in the good time of Iman. 59 4-ssec. In the 880 yards club handicap, J. McCashln, Wanganui, won by a little more than his handicap of 15 yards. W. H. Clementson and A. J. Darby, of Wanganui, off eight yards, ran well to take first and second in the 100 yards club handicap, in which the time was ten seconds. Clementson won also the 220 yards club handicap. In the 100 yards open handicap, K. Jackson (Scottish Harriers) won in an extremely close finish. The time was again ten seconds. Miss D. Hurley, Wellington, was most prominent in the women’s events. Grose Extended. F. Grose, national representative, cyclist, who was invited to the meeting, and made a trip from Christchurch to participate, was given some very stiff opposition, particularly by L. Roberts (Wellington), T. Roe (Petone), and J. Wade (Wanganui). Grose won the 880 yards invitation race from Roberts, and also the one mile invitation race, in which he pulled up quickly near the end on the inside of Roe and Wade. Most of the longer cycle races were principally a fight of tactics, but the three miles invitation event, in which a pacer was used, appeared to extend all riders fully. Grose was ahead most of
Ulf way, but in the last lap Roberts, followed by Roe, pushed ahead and narrowly held their positions. Detailed Results.
