OLD RIVALS TO MEET IN FINAL
Australian Tennis Title CRAWFORD AND McGRATH WIN DOUBLES By Telegrnlili —l‘ress Assu.—Copyright. (Received January 11. 9.55 p.m.) Melbourne, January 10. In the remaining semi-final of the Australian singles championship Perry defeated (McGrath in straight sets, and will meet Crawford in tlie final. McGrath, who attacked Perry bn the backhand, was unable to withstand the latter’s fast drives. Tlie match was disappointing, as a great'battle was expected in view of McGrath’s great fight against Perry at tlie 1934 national meeting and his victory over him at Sydney in December. Perry is undoubtedly right back to form, and Crawford will have to be at his best to have any chance of winning the final to-morrow. Crawford and McGrath, playing with brilliant combination, downed the English champions in a thrilling match. McGrath, in contrast to his singles form, played as well as he lias ever done. Tlie pair won on pure merit. Perry and Hughes were well beaten. The Englishwomen. Misses Lyle and Round. pursued their untroubled course through to tlie semi-finals, though Mrs. Hopman gave Miss Lyle a good fight to-day. Results are: —
Men’s singles—Semi-final: F. J. Perrv (Britain) defeated V. McGrath. 6-2. 6-3, 6-1. Men’s doubles —final: Crawford and McGrath defeated Perry and Hughes, 6-4, 8-6, 6-2.
