STARTING A LOTTERY
Prosecution at Christchurch
By Telegraph—Press Association,
Christchurch, January 8.
A penny "donation” scheme to augment the funds of the Stanmore Silver Band led to the appearance before the magistrate, Mr. H. A. Young, of the secretary, William J. M. Gosney, on a charge of starting a lottery. He was fined £1 and costs.
The police said that the prize was 500 cigarettes. The defendant had been quite frank, saying that similar “competitions” were being run all over the Dominion. That, however, added the sub-inspector, was hardly true. The Magistrate: There is nothing on the ticket about 500 cigarettes.
The .Sub-Inspector: That is for purpose of evasion. The purchasers were told that there would be 500 cigarettes for the lucky buyer.
