Accident With Petrol
Two accidents caused by the ignition of petrol have happened in Wellington within a week. The second occurred yesterday, the tire brigade being called to 137 Elizabeth Street, a residence occupied by Mrs. E. Eraser, where a minor outbreak had resulted from the use of petrol in starting it lire in the kitchen stove. The brigade received the call at 1.45 p.m. Only minor damage was done to the building, which -s owned by Mrs. A. Nissenbaum, 44 Macfarlane .Street. Disturbance in Street.
A plea of guilty to a charge of using obscene language was made in the Wellington Magistrate’s Court yesterday by William John Mabin, labourer, aged 47, and Mr. W. IT. Stilwell, S.M., lined him £2, in default 14 days’ imprisonment. It was stated that he was walking down Lambton Quay and calling out in a loud voice. Women and children were near, and he created quite a scene, although lie was quite sober at the time. lie had been before the court previously for “exactly similar conduct.” Apart from pleading guilty, Mabin said he had nothing to say to the charge. Dog’s Ordeal.
The blind and hopeless struggles of an exhausted fox terrier to save itself from drowning were watched by passers-by on Oriental Parade on a recent evening. The small dog was iu the water opposite the Orient Hotel and near some steps, which, however, were invisible to it, and it was found pathetically pawing the vertical concrete seawall as if to climb it. The dog was rescued by a boy of about twelve who took his shirt and shoes off and swam to the animal. This is not the first time a dog lias been in such a predicament. One was rescued previously by the owner of another dog sending into the water his own pet which led the other to the nearest steps.
