Great Northern Derby GAY BLONDE WINS Third Day at Ellerslie Dominion Special Service. • Auckland, January 1. Overcast, showery weather prevailed for the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting, which was continued at Ellerslie to-day. The track was slightly greasy. The attendance was fair, and the totalisator investments were £45,127, against £56,244/10/- on the third day last year, a decrease of £11,117/10/-. The total for the meeting to date js £154.268/10/-, compared with £155,545 for three days last year, a decrease of £1276/10/-. The defeat of Synagogue, favourite for the Great Northern Derby, by Gay Blonde and Kelly, was one of the features of the racing at the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting at Ellerslie to-day. Synagogue had every chance, but Gay Blonde, who was in the rear until half a mile from home, sprinted too well for the others at the finish.
Light rain after the first race made the track a little greasy on the surface, and this no doubt contributed to the falls in the hurdle race, in which only three of the contestants were left in the race after the third hurdle. Convincing Win. The three-year-old Lionheart, fourth fancy to Maroha, Nun Nicer, and Crooning, scored a very convincing win in the J Ellerslie Handicap, leading throughout i and staying on to prevail by over a length from Nun Nicer, who finished ' strongly on the outside after drifting in the early stages. Persian Lady Surprises. Persian Lady brought off a surprise when she finished strongly on the rails to win the Midsummer Handicap. Golden Princess was in front and going like a winner until she ran almost out to the outside rail rounding the turn and was eventually pulled up. This left Flood Tide, Going Gay, and Velocipede in front, with Persian Lady closing up on the inside. Persian Lady finished well to win by a length from Flood Tide, with Light Comedy a close third, and Velocipede fourth.
Easy Hurtlies Win. Only three of the seven runners completed the course in the New Year’s Hurdles. Penny Plain, Sandy Dix, and King Win fell at the second fence, and Hounslow at the third, leaving Illuminate a couple of lengths in front of Verden, with'Kilmuir fifteen lengths back. Verden assumed the lead from Illuminate over half a mile from home, and beat him very easily. was two furlongs awa.v third, just jumping the last fence when the other pair hud pulled up. Vintage Wins Well, Vintage was installed favourite for the , Auckland Racing Club Handicap, and duly won. Great Star and Grand Jury made most of the running, and they were' the leaders into the straight from Vintage, who was on the outside ahead of King March on the rails throughout, Caliente and Spiral. Vintage assumed command about the distance, and won handsomely from King March, who was ridden a perfect race on the rails. Grand Jury was a moderate third, just beating Caliente, who was alongside him over the last furlong. Rocket, Great Star, and Spiral were the next to finish. Race for the Derby. Kelly attempted to lead all the way in the Great Northern Derby, but it was a slowly run race, and Gay Blonde, who was in the fear until reaching the'halfmile, proved too brilliant in the run home and beat him by a length. Synagogue was a fair third. It was a slowly-run race, and Gay Blonde was too speedy for the others in the run home. Synagogue had every chance, and no excuses can be made for him. Kelly again proved himself a solid racehorse and was probably the best stayer in the field. Win for Favourite. Matorni was the favourite for the County Handicap and duly won. Matorni drew No. 12, but actually started from No. 3, his rider, L. J. Ellis, being fined £2 for changing positions at the post. Matorni followed Tunneller, Tybalt, Adalene, and Respectful into the straight to win decisively by a length from Tunneller, who beat Tybalt by half a length. High Tea was fourth, followed by Adalene, whose saddle slipped, Respectful, and Miss Lulu. Silver Jubilee Easily. Silver Jubilee was favourite for the Newmarket Handicap, and realised expectations by winning easily. Star Artist jumped out clear from No. 1, but Silver Jubilee soon reached the front and was never afterward headed, to win by three lengths from Cranford, who followed him into the straight. Rereatu and Star Artist were a length away, a dead-heat for third, followed by Imamint, British Columbia, Copyist, and King Ford. Won All the Way. The field left to a walk-in start in the Glasgow Handicap, and Hunting Jay jumped away in front from the outside and led throughout to win by three parts of a length from Cherry King, who came on the outside after attempting to go up on the inside of the winner at the distance. Cherry King finished very resolutely, and he might have won if he had not been squeezed for room when he tried to go through on the inside.
