WEST TOR’S CUP

Racing at Tauherenikau

NAVAHO’S SPRINT Anderson Rides Four Winners The Wairarapa Racing Club's summer meeting opened, at Tauherenikau yesterday in hot, sunny weather. The attendance did not appear to be up to the usual standard, due no doubt to the smallness of the fields, four of which were of onedividend dimensions. Consequently betting was very restricted, the sum of £10,633/10/- being handled, against £15,578/10/- on the opening day last year.

The Wairarapa Cup was won by West Tor,, who is owned by Mr. W. Cooper, president of the Masterton Racing Club. West Tor has run consistently but unluckily this season, and his success was very popular. The open sprint race was again won by Navaho, who has scored nt the last six Wairarapa meetings At which he has competed. Riding honours were taken by S. Anderson, who piloted four winners, while the Riccarton trainers, H. and A. Cutte, produced three winners for Sir Charles Clifford in Knock Out, Hororata and Fracas. Likes the Course. Navaho gave further evidence of hie liking for the Tauherenikau track by winning the Electric Handicap from Caw been, Souchong and Aston. Souchong

was slow away, but caught the leaders at the end of two furlongs. The field faced abreast round the home turn and Navaho .finished best to beat Cawbeen a neck, with Souchong close up third and Aston last. Souchong's legs filled after Feilding and little has been done with him. He was obviously above himself in condition. Navaho’s performance was a useful one, as he was" three horses out from the fence all the way. Knock Out .Beats Purse. Knock Out won the Featherston Hack . Handicap after being in behind the lead- I er s from barrier rise. Bay Area and State Bank made the early pace, but Bay Area's rider lost his irons and she drifte'l back, leaving State. Bank. Purse, Knock Out and Confiscation in charge from Grand Blow, Rene Bell, Chaste and lerimeter. Puree had a slight advantage at the home turn, but Knock Out woi-3 her down and won by a little more than a length. Purse kept going long enough to neck off State Bank, who would have been a sure second with more vigorous riding. Grand Blow was fourth, and after a gap came Rene Belle. Chaste, Confiscation, Dover Patrol, Perimeter and Bay Area. Confiscation and Perimeter showed up on the outer across the ton. ) but soon dropped out again. The best ridden horses finished first and second. , Hororata All the Way. Hororata was backed for a good thing in the Nursery Handicap, and she duly i landed the prize from very weak opposiI |i on '. She had the inside funning from | Fulojoy to the distance, where she drew away to win by a length from Nightlass, who outstayed Fulojoy over the last furlong. Boomerang, a colt by Iliad from Graciosa, the dam of Might, was troublesome at the start and ran last all the way. Hororata is easily the best juvenile at the meeting. • West Tor's Cup. West Tor, one of the most consistent horses in commission, broke a long succession of minor placings when he won the Wairarapa Cup stylishly from Inflation and Autopay. Hazoor was favourite, but he ran disappointingly. West i I s ma ke the "pace and never had the lead, taken from him. Hatuma, Inflation, Bonnie Vale, Hazoor, Vertigern and Autopay followed the leader in that order along the back. Inflation went up to take West Tor on at the home turn and appeared to have the race in hand ! when West Tor took charge of his rider, bored out wide, and with a great finishing ' run won by nearly two lengths from Inflation, who bent Autopay by a length. Bonnie Vale, Hazoor. Vertigern, and Hatuma were next to finish.

West Tor confirmed his Manawatu form, winning well. Inflation broke down badly in the funning and was in a bad way when he returned to the enclosure. The slow early pace suited Autopay, who looked likely at the distance, but ten furlongs proved too far for him. They ran the last mile in 1.39. , the others over looked a possibility. Umpire Downs Sunee.

iXnpire led all the way to win the Champion Hack Handicap from three others. He had the inside running from Sunee all the way, and at the distance Te Ua joined in the struggle. Superior stamina stood to Umpire, who won by a neck ironi Sunee, Te Ua being a length back third and Dorado close up.

Fracas's Good Form. There were only three starters in the ’’ardell Handicap, and Fracas was backed down to the short price her form warranted. She made all the pace, and in a truly-run seven furlongs, the last half of which was covered in 48sec., she easily disposed of Pladie and Da Poupee, who could make no impression on her whatever. Kemball Stable Scores. Orby's Last stayed a little too well for Tupurangi in the Wharekaka Handicap.

The early leaders were Dollar Bill and De Trop, but crossing the top Orby’s Last ran into second place, and was just behind Dollar Bill at the home turn. Tupurangi came from a good way back to tackle Orby’s Last, but failed to wear him down by a short neck. De Trop petered out in the last four furlongs, and struggled on to get third. Dollar Bill was fourth, then Acceptable and All Speed. Orby’s Last's form at Awapuni was not his best. He went a much more solid race on this occasion. Acceptable showed none of the speed which he is known to possess. He was expected to improve with his Awapuni outings. Revival Wins Novice. Inveresk and Otauru King began best in the Novice Stakes, and led to the distance, where Revival, who had been third all the way, came through and won easily by two lengths from Inveresk, who beat Otauru King by a head*for second. Conception was fourt.’., Darecourt fifth, and Helen Ford sixth. Many of the runners missed the jump out, and were soon strung out. Among them were Recitation, Gold Vein, aud Helen Ford.
