Qualifying Rounds at Miramar

NEW YEAR TOURNAMENT

Only some 80 entries were received for the Miramar Golf Club’s annual New Year tournament, which commenced yesterday in perfect weather, with a light north-westerly wind tempering the rays of the sun. The links were burnt brown by the prolonged drought, and players found it difficult to judge pace. About 2 o’clock in the afternoon, light rain started to fall, and players who finished late got a light drenching, but the downpour was welcomed, as it cooled the. temperature, and made the greens a little more holding. Chief interest centred in the two qualifying rounds to decide the sixteen to play off tor the New Year championship. Harold Black (Miramar) headed the list with rounds of 72 and 75, being three strokes ahead of W. T. Kuru (Dannevirke), who recorded two 75’s. The sixteen who qualified to play off for the championship were: —

Medal Competition. The following were the best cards returned in the handicap medal competition over the two rounds: — W. H. Lees, sen., 169-34-135; W. T. Kuru, 150-8-142; H. Hanson, 174-32-142; V. R. Gunn, 171-28-143; J. Flanagan, 161-18-143; P. J. F. Fordham, 169-26-143; H. Boon, 160-16-144: W. J. Davidge, 160-16-144. The secretary of the Miramar Golf Club, Mr. T. H. Ward v. W. J. Davidee; H. E. H. Aplin v. J. Shelly; F. Page v. J. Kember; J. L. Black v. F. E. Stubberfield; J. Flanagan v. G. W. Horne; D. Stratmore v. H. Boon ; J. Kuru v. F. Kember. The following is the draw for the group competitions, which will commence at 9.35 a.m. to-day, pairs following each other at 4-minute intervals: —

Group 1: Clark v. L. Marsden, Hurst v. Giesen, Esau v. McGirr, Greig v. Kerens, Lewis v. Stephen, Crawford v. H. Parkin, Mills v. Brockett, Armstrong v. Robinson.

Group 2: Sutherland v. Begg, Cousins v. Hosie, Berry v. Connolly, Heslop v. McNair, A. Marsden v. W. J. Lauchlan, Parsloe v. Gunn, Sanford v. Robson, Coyle v. Cloleman. Group 3: Hughes v.
